OUR EVENTS
COMING UP!
|
Hi!
Well it's only the second email issue and I'm already a day behind schedule, which is to be expected I suppose. I hope you liked the last edition, and thanks to all of the new subscribers for showing an interest.
In this issue, the main article comes from Michael McHugh, part of the ever expanding Fratelli di Rimini who infiltrate every corner of this city with their jakking house and euphoric italo disco. The subject of the Salford man's thought is that of the growing 'sale-abilty' of Factory Records and the myth this has created.
There's a little review of Rebecca Jones' album in the music section from me and some nice events to go to as well. Last week's Bicycle artist exhibition was excellent, well done to all of the artists and organisers for creating such a top, and, secret (oops!) event.
The Star and Shadow building festival continues this week, with finishing touches to complete on the now very colourful building. Today, tomorrow, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are open for would-be maintenence women and men.
bye for now,
Debbora x

The Factory Myth By Michael McHugh
Like thousands of others, Factory Records had a profound effect on me. It opened the door into a world that included acid house, electro, pop art, graphics, punk, hi-nrg, and disco. The list could go on.
Factory changed my life. I owe it a great debt...READ MORE

EVENTS
Our events are listed to your right, but here's some other stuff worth looking out for after this wet bank holiday weekend.

Pinch presents... a BYOB sailing extravaganza
Saturday 30th August, from 6pm at The Ouseburn Boat Club (opposite The Tyne pub). £3 on the door.
Three of the rocket ship-iest (The Bubble Project), mermaid-iest (SJR), and giant squid-iest (Pale Man Made) bands in Newcastle, with Ghost Fleet from Leeds and Songstores all the way from Spain. As with all gigs of this nature, where you're in control of your own alcohol, the venue is completely unique, and the start is early, it should be as laid back as you can get which always makes for an good day.

Tuesday 21st October
The Research
+ Special Guests
The Cumberland Arms
£6; 8pm
Always a second homecoming for the Wakefield lo-fi pop band who have recently broken off their relationship with EMI. The new album release is imminent, inspired by long hours listening to Little Richard's muse, Sister Rosetta Tharpe.

MUSIC
Rebecca Jones - Out of Water. Ex-Libris Records.
To place this as a new folk standard would not be to over-praise; the traditional structures give a longevity to the completely non-pretentious and haunting melodies found within. Such qualities are largely unattainable by many of the modern alt-folk brigade; these are songs that would be as easy round a fire as they are on a stage; songs with a perfect, intuitive, arrangement that touches the core; the shuffling and stomping percussion and multi-instrumental depth only sounds unusual and exciting because we have forgotten how to make music that echoes the resonance of our own being. This is not to brush aside Jones' lyrical power and beautiful vocal, which snarlingly sings of masculine dominance; soaring like the birds she adores when singing of eternal optimism; defiantly embracing nature against human constraints; wishful for a simpler life.
"Someday my dreams will fly away, then I won't be so sad."
Album release party 12th September but available to purchase at gigs and online. www.myspace.com/rebeccajanejones
